Riley:
She rolled more than when once again, staring in the clock. It was nearly three o?clock within the morning, and she had yet to fall asleep even for a moment. There were just so many points operating via her head. Everything was so jumbled and confusing; Riley didn?t even know exactly where to begin to sort points out.
She was angry, she knew that considerably. Angry at her grandparents for whisking her away like this. She missed New York, and even far more than New York she missed Shaun. She didn?t know the best way to act without having him; she didn?t know who she genuinely even was.
Everything in her life had suddenly changed so drastically, and Riley had so numerous unanswered questions. Was she going to live here forever? Were her grandparents asking her to live with them permanently, or was this just a summer thing? If it was just for the summer, exactly where would she go when summer was over? She ought to be preparing for college?but she had no money, and no clue exactly where to apply. Her grades almost certainly weren?t nearly very good enough anyway.
Riley sighed restlessly, squeezing her temples and wishing she could turn off her thoughts. But there was no way to cease them, they were an endless wave flooding her brain. She didn?t really feel as if she would ever have the ability to sort them all out.
Shaun was the last thing she thought about just before an uneasy and restless sleep overtook her at nearly 4 o?clock inside the morning.

Bright sunlight flooding her room woke Riley up way too early for her liking. She groaned and rolled more than, but to no avail; the sun invaded from all sides. Rolling out of bed, she stood up and paused for a moment. What was she supposed to do? Did she go downstairs and get something to eat? Did they’ve a normal morning routine? She never realized how difficult and uncomfortable it was moving in with people which you barely knew.
Riley lastly decided to make a cautious trek downstairs, and discovered her grandmother sitting at the tiny table drinking a cup of coffee in their bright, airy kitchen. She looked up at Riley and smiled.
“Good morning sweetie,” she stated warmly. “I don?t know what you generally do for breakfast. I cooked Walter some scrambled eggs, Lord knows your grandfather can?t go every day without them. I produced some added just in case you wanted some; there?s bread inside the cupboard if you want some toast and strawberry jam in the fridge. Or should you?d rather just have cereal, we have that too.”
Riley didn?t know what to say. She didn?t exactly know the best way to act usually with folks; individuals who were truly nice to her. She realized that basically her whole life had been spent with her father or with Shaun, and for the last couple of years solely with Shaun. Neither one of them had been precisely cream of the crop, so to speak.
“Thanks,” she stated quietly, pausing and then asking, “Where are the plates?”
Her grandmother stood up and scurried over to among the cabinets, acquiring Riley down a plate a pushing her into a chair. “Sit down, sit down, I?ll get it for you sweetie. Eggs and toast sound good, then?”
Riley forced a smile and nodded, all the even though questioning when the good game was going to finish. “Where?s granddad?”
“Oh, he?s already out on the farm. He?s getting the tobacco transplanted from indoors to the field, lastly. We got a bit of a late start but we feel it?s going to be just fine.”
So they truly are farmers, she thought. Could my life have created a a lot more complete 180?
“What are your plans for nowadays?”
“Uh, I don?t actually know. I guess?nicely absolutely nothing I guess.”
“Good, excellent. We can invest some time together then. I?ve got a great deal of function to do on the vegetable garden out back, you can aid me with that. And later on this afternoon I?ll take you down to our neighboring farm to meet Mrs. Buchanan. I think I?ve worked out a ideal summer job for you: she has two daughters, three-year-old twins, and she genuinely requirements someone to watch them this summer although she goes to work. Would you be interested?”
Interested? Riley was terrified. She wasn?t good with youngsters, in fact she had by no means actually been around them in her whole life. But then once again, it was a job. One she already had set, one that she wouldn?t need to drive far away for. “Sure, that sounds great.” Soon after a pause, attempting to don’t forget the manners she had in no way really been taught, she tacked on a quiet, “Thank you.”
And then it hit her. Buchanan. That was the boy?s last name she had just met the night ahead of, wasn?t it? As her grandmother began to do the dishes, Riley nonchalantly asked, “Does Mrs. Buchanan have an older son?”
She could hear the smile in her grandmother?s reply, although her back was turned. “Why yes she does?I see you?ve already met Levi. He?s a fantastic young man; he has an wonderful heart. He assists us far too much with our farm, but we don?t know what we?d do without having him. What did you believe of him?”
“He was?good.” He wasn?t Shaun, but he was nice.
___________________________
By mid-afternoon, Riley had transplanted, staked, and watered a whole garden of tomatoes. She had sewn on a shirt button for the first time in her life, albeit having a few finger pricks and angry remarks. Most importantly, she had relaxed; and despite the fact that she hated to admit it, she had really enjoyed the time spent with her grandmother. Despite the fact that Riley herself had stayed fairly quiet, her grandmother had kept the conversation rolling with intriguing stories about her experiences on the farm, her own childhood, and so on.
They were now sitting out on the back porch with her grandfather, each and every drinking a glass of their homemade sweet tea. Riley took a deep breath in, looking about and letting the cool liquid slide down her throat. This location is so lovely. Many different birds had been fluttering about a birdfeeder not far from the porch, their distinct chirps forming an eclectic and oddly beautiful melody. The sun shone down brightly, and Riley relished the warmth on her skin.
“Riley, I?d say it?s about time we head on down to the Buchanan?s farm. I?d love for you to meet Susan, and I?ve got some articles I want to give her about three-year-olds anyway; she?s been getting trouble using the girls? naps lately.”
Riley nodded in consent. They created their way out front and climbed into her grandfather?s truck. She didn?t know why, but she felt several butterflies flutter in her stomach as she wondered if she would see Levi or not.
Levi:
Levi was out in the backyard when he heard a truck rumbling by way of the gravel road up to their home. Curious, he walked around the side to see who was coming. It wasn?t exactly a frequent factor for cars to drive by.
He caught his breath as Riley jumped down out of Walter and Emma Montgomery?s pickup truck. Her lengthy, wavy hair was caught back in a loose ponytail, with numerous wisps framing her face. She wore a simple outfit of black sports shorts as well as a t-shirt; but Levi thought she might be the prettiest girl he had ever noticed.
Walking back around behind the house, Levi picked up the shovel and continued digging out the new garden patch his mother had asked him to make for her. He wondered why Riley was here; and hoped to God she would come out back so he could have an excuse to speak to her.
Riley:
Riley nervously followed her grandmother as much as the front door, shifting her weight from foot to foot as she waited for Mrs. Buchanan to answer the knock on the door. She didn?t know why meeting new men and women produced her so nervous?in fact she did. It was simply due to the fact she wasn?t excellent with individuals at all.
Moments later, a plump woman with golden hair thrown up in a loose bun answered the door, beaming. She looked to be in her forties, with all the exact same chocolate brown eyes that Riley distinctly remembered from Levi. “Emma! How good to see you. And I?m assuming this lovely young woman is your granddaughter.”
Riley felt her face flame up quickly; it was moments like these when she particularly hated being so fair. Blushing quickly just came using the territory. Her grandmother replied, “Susan, this is Riley. Riley, this really is Mrs. Buchanan.”
“Please, call me Susan,” she stated warmly, holding out her hand.
Riley forced a smile and returned the handshake. “Nice to meet you,” she said quietly.
They walked inside and Riley looked about curiously; the house wasn?t large, but it was tastefully decorated using a neat, country charm. Sun seemed to shine in from every angle, generating the house appear all the much more bright and cheery.
“Susan, I?ve got some articles I discovered in a magazine that I believed you may find interesting. They?re all about three-year-olds, as well as a lot of parents are interviewed that give some various perspectives,” Riley?s grandmother stated.
“Thanks so a lot Emma,” Susan stated with a smile. “I?ve actually got some far more jars of honey we just collected, I was going to bring them over to y’all when I got the chance. Let me get them out of the cupboard?”
As she rummaged by way of the kitchen cupboard, her voice echoed out behind her, “Riley honey, your grandmother told me you?d be interested in a babysitting job for me this summer. I swear, that could be a life saver. I?ve got a brand new job waitressing at one of the diners in town to help bring in some additional money, and I?m supposed to be beginning within the subsequent few days. Is that too soon for you?”
“No, not at all,” Riley stated awkwardly. “Just let me know when I need to come over.”
“Well luckily, I talked with my boss about my scenario, and he?s given me a pretty steady schedule. He?s agreed to let me work the identical hours every single day, from opening until 3 in the afternoon. So should you could come over here at 9:30 Monday morning, that could be ideal.”
She finally discovered the honey and brought it more than to the counter where Riley and her grandmother were standing. “If you need to meet the children, I feel they?re out back somewhere with Levi.”
Riley looked briefly at her grandmother, who nodded and stated, “Why don?t you go on out. We?ll be inside whenever you?re prepared.”
Making her way by means of the kitchen, Riley opened the back door and stepped outside. She looked around, taking in the view. What was it with these men and women? Initial her grandparents, now the Buchanans?they all had totally stunning pieces of land. She felt like she had stepped out into a fairy tale. Gardens covered the majority of the instant ground outside the back of the residence; past the gardens was absolutely nothing but land. A field that seemed to stretch for miles; Riley saw a barn sitting at the leading of a hill, as well as a few cows grazed lazily about it.
And then she saw Levi. He wore jeans and work boots, with no shirt. At the moment, he was lifting a bit girl up and swinging her about; Riley couldn?t aid but notice the muscles in his back and arms as they glistened inside the sun. She felt a modest smile tug at her lips as the small girl?s peal of laughter echoed down to her.
For when in a very lengthy time, Shaun and her life in New York City had been the last issues on her mind as she produced her way by way of the gardens and up the path that led to exactly where Levi and his small siblings were playing.
